Background
The Cambridge Food For Life is the most versatile of the Cambridge nutritional formulas. The formula was developed in 1984 by Dr. Robert Nesheim specifically to meet guidelines provided by the United States Food and Drug Administration. Retaining the critical balance of the Original Cambridge, Dr. Nesheim increased the protein and carbohydrate content for an extra margin of safety when used as the sole source of nutrition.

The Original Cambridge was the very first Cambridge nutritional formula introduced in 1979. The formula’s nutritional profile is based on the original research conducted by Dr. Howard at Cambridge University and Middlesex Hospital in England during the early 1970’s. The rights to the formula were obtained by Cambridge Direct Sales in 1979 and followed by over two years of flavor development to produce a palatable and commercially marketable product. So successful was this work that many prefer the taste of the Original Cambridge Diet to any other formula.

The first Cambridge nutrition bar was introduced in 1983. The bar contained high vitamin and mineral content of the formula, and the shelf life was very short, and well, let's just say it lacked in the flavor department. Under the direction of Dr. Nesheim, ongoing experimentation and development eventually broke through the bar technology barrier with spectacular success. Today’s Food For Life nutrition bars have the same great nutritional value, but with the moist and chewy taste of a high qualify candy bar and a shelf life that has been more than tripled.

NutriCare products were developed by Dean Distributors (Cambridge’s parent Company) for distribution in the nursing home and long-term health care markets. In 1996, the Dean laboratories working with Sunkist flavor technology developed a unique sugar free beverage crystal that was an instant success with health care customers. Recognizing the importance of non-caloric fluid intake in the Cambridge programs, Dean developed smaller, more flexible packaging and introduced the NutriCare Beverage Crystals to the Cambridge Product line in 1998.
